The Van Dyke Brick plant operated until

the 1950’s. The state bought the 5,382
acres from Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical
Company in 1964. It was designated The
Tuscarora Wild Area. In 2’013 the state
dedicated it as the James C. Nelson Wild
Area. He was one of our State foresters.
