Railroad Tunnel

Tuscarora State Forest

This tunnel was created to expand the Pennsylvania Railroad from New Germantown to Franklin County.
In 1893, the Path Valley Railroad Company was chartered and grading commenced. With excavation in
Conococheague Mountain, large conglomerates of stone crumbled, and then caused the collapsing of the
newly blasted tunnel. A second attempt also failed and the tunnel was left as a simple hole. This tunnel was
not to be the link westward for Perry County.
